2.2. OBMEP at Unicamp. Under the coordination of Prof. Laura Rifo, the project organizes scheduled visits from participating schools of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad of Public Schools (OBMEP), including mathematics workshops at IMECC and activities offered by other partner units, in order that students have access to the Campus and the various options that UNICAMP offers as a possible academic future. In 2017, we had the visit of almost 400 students to the Campus, which was repeated in 2018. By 2019, we expect to receive 800 high school students. The project counts on undergraduate and postgraduate students from UNICAMP, who act as monitors in the mathematical workshops. More information can be seen on the project website

2.3. Institutional Program of Scientific Initiation Scholarships for High School (PIBIC-EM). This program provides high school students from Campinas public schools and region the opportunity to develop Scientific Research activities under the guidance of Unicamp professors and researchers. From 2015 to 2018, the retired faculty member of our department, Otilia Terezinha Paques, participated in this program. PIBIC-EM has been presenting results that directly reflect the increase in the interest of the participating students in entering higher education.

3. Mathematical Olympiads:

3.1. Brazilian Olympiad of Mathematics of Public Schools (OBMEP).  Faculties in our program participate in the promotion and organization of OBMEP. In 2015, the regional coordinator of OBMEP was Prof. Ricardo M. Martins, and, since 2016, the regional coordinator is Profa. Laura Rifo.

3.2. Intensive Olympic Training Centers (POTI). This initiative consists of creating/developing a training centre in Mathematical Olympiads for students from Campinas and region. This activity has a two-sided benefit: the program benefits with the capturing of potential talented students and the community benefits by fostering a taste for mathematics among young students. This activity is associated with the national Olympic polo program ( and is connected to the preparation/training of students for scientific Olympiads such as OBM, OBMEP and OMU. Since 2018, a new project for POTI at IMECC has been approved, under the coordination of Prof. Laura Rifo. In this new edition, invited speakers are: Gabriel Ponce, Ricardo Mirando and Diego Ledesma. The classes are organized by graduate students of the Mathematics, PROFMAT and PECIM programs, and are monitored by undergraduate scholarship students, most of whom have a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. The program had 120 students enrolled in 2018, with approximately 90 hours of class throughout the year. We expect the same amount for 2019.

3.3. Mathematical Olympiad of UNICAMP (OMU).  Currently, in its thirty-fourth edition, the OMU is organized in two levels: Alpha Level, for students of the 8th and 9th year of Elementary and Beta Level for high school students. The OMU has played a key role in encouraging the study of mathematics, attracting talent and improving mathematics education in participating schools, through the training and depth practising groups set up by schools to prepare their students. Faculties involved recently in this activity: Profs. Marcelo Firer, Anne Bronzi, José Régis Varão, Ricardo M. Martins and Gabriel Ponce.

3.4. Project Medalists. Since 2015, this project has organized a meeting with medalists of scientific olympiads, with academic activities of interaction and integration with the institution. The project has attracted OBMEP and OBM medalists from across the country to Unicamp for a day of lectures on math. Some of the students who participated in the project became undergraduate students of Unicamp in mathematics, physics and engineering and had fellowships of Scientific Initiation within the PICME/OBMEP project. Faculties involved recently in this activity: Lino Grama, Ricardo Miranda, Henrique Sá Earp and Marcelo Firer.

4. Lectures Series, cIneMatECCa and Extension Bulletin:

4.1. Extension Lecture Series (CPE). The CPE was created and is coordinated by Professor Laura Rifo. Its activities started on 03/2016. It was created with the aim of highlighting the existing dialogue between mathematics and other expressions of the human intellect in the arts, sciences and technologies. The lectures, monthly and approximately 1 hour in length, are free and addressed to an audience of broad interest, not necessarily familiar with advanced math concepts.

The program is available on the page:

4.2. Cinema Series of IMECC-Unicamp (cIneMatECCa). This activity was initiated on 03/2016 and coordinated by Prof. Laura Rifo, member of our PPG-M until 2017. In cIneMatECCa, we aim to show the mathematics captured/seen by filmmakers: films, documentaries and animations of the commercial and independent circuit. The cycle is free and open to the public.

More details can be found on cIneMatECCa's website

4.3. Extension Bulletin. This is a monthly publication addressed to the Unicamp community (students, teachers and staff), whose purpose is to publicize the extension activities of IMECC-Unicamp and temporary or permanent events of our research groups. We also have a section with curiosities or problems related to mathematics and its dissemination to a general audience. The Profa. Laura Rifo of our PPG-M kept the bulletin from 11/2015 to 06/2017, as Extension Coordinator of IMECC.

4.4. Fantastic Mathematical World. Scientific dissemination project created in 2018 by Prof. Régis Varão from the Mathematics Graduate Program on youtube. The channel is presented by Prof. Régis Varão together with his pupil Joaquim. The purpose of the channel is to show math how it should really be viewed. This is because we do not always have the opportunity to know mathematics as we should through traditional teaching methods.

4.5. Stars observation. Between 2018 and 2019 the IMECC maintained an agreement with the Municipal Observatory of Campinas Jean Nicolini (supervised by Prof. Rafael Leão of the Postgraduate Program in Mathematics) where several activities of observation of the sky of Campinas were carried out with the participation of members of the Unicamp and the Campinas community.

4.6. Organization and participation in round tables or scientific dissemination events. Professors Laura Rifo, Régis Varão, Ricardo Miranda and Anne Bronzi from our program have participated in various activities of scientific dissemination giving lectures at various institutions. In 2019, Prof. Anne participated in the organization of the event Girls Supercientists, held at Unicamp, in order to encourage girls to pursue a career in science.

5. Teacher Training and Renovating Programs:

5.1. Training Program for High School Mathematics Teachers (PAPMEM). IMECC-Unicamp is one of the training centres of PAPMEM, which consists of classes offered by IMPA for elementary and high school Mathematics teachers. Members of our graduate program have coordinated this program: until January 2016, we had Prof. Marcos Jardim as coordinator; since July 2016, the coordination is in charge of Profa. Laura Rifo.
