The major actual working field for geophysicists is in maltidisciplinary groups where Geophysics acts jointly and in synergy with other disciplines in the search for solutions of engineering, mineral and hydrocarbon prospection, environmental issues, etc. The formation of professionals with the aim of working in these important areas of science and technology  must include not only the proficiency in the geophysical knowledge, but also the capacity of cooperating constructively with professionals of various disciplines. Within this modern vision of professional insertion, the State University of Campinas -- UNICAMP -- offers graduate courses (Master and PhD degrees)  and post-doctoral research visits in diverse areas, where Geophysics plays a role of fundamental importance.

Responsible Units

Master and PhD Courses

The following courses at the level of Master or PhD studies are offered in the areas of concentration or specific research:

Post -Doctorates

Post-Doctoral research visits can be realized in anyone of the above units, either along the offered research lines or following an individual research plan of mutual interest.

Research Areas

Grants

Graduate Studies: All above-mentioned graduate courses count on support by the financial agencies CNPq and CAPES that offer student grants. Grants from FAPESP are also available by means of specific projects that are formulated jointly by the student and the adviser. Although there is no guaranty with respect to student grants for all applicants, the past shows that there has never been a lack of necessary help to the students.

Post-Doctoral Studies: Post-doctoral research visits are encouraged in various different modelities suggested by the financial agencies CNPq, CAPES and FAPESP. The support of these visits include grants for post-docs, recent PhDs, associate researcher, and visiting researcher. Solicitations are made by menas of proper forms of the agencies and letter of acceptance of the advising researcher or the responsible of one of the courses.

Computational Instalations

Graduate works and research count on the support of various computational laboratories in the different units (Laboratory of Geologic Computer Science, Laboratory of Geo-referenced Image Proecessing, Laboratory of Applied Mathematics, and LAboratory of Computer Science of Petroleum Engineering), all of which are equipped with modern work stations (UNIX) and PCs (Windows). Thes labs also make available a set of assorted software for the processing and interpretation of geophysical data, geostatistical analysis, fluid flow simulation, etc. In the case of any need for intense computational means, the equipment of the National Center for High-Performance Processing, associated to the Computer Center of UNICAMP, can be used. This Center relies on major computes and workstation networks that are adapted to parallel processing.

Interaction between the University and the Industry

With the aim to aggregate researchers from different faculties and institutes that carry out research related to the petroleum industry, UNICAMP has created a specific institution, the Center for Petroleum Studies (CEPETRO). CEPETRO acts as a catalysator of the interaction between university and industry, in this way supporting the management and application of the results of the various research projects in partnership with the petroleum industry.  It also organizes scientific events with the objective of divulging and discussing the ongoing research at UNICAMP, together with the introduction of new research projects of interest to be carried out.
