This is the first Workshop on nonlinear dispersive equations to be held in the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computation (IMECC), State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, Brazil, from 30/10 to 1/11/2013.

Research on nonlinear PDEs of dispersive type in Brazil started with the publication of a paper “On the Cauchy problem for the Benjamin-Ono equation”, by Rafael Iório in the Journal “Communications in PDE, vol. 11, (1986) 1031-1081”. This paper was a result of the Post-doctoral research of the author with Tosio Kato in University of California at Berkeley. Later, Márcia Scialom, student of Iório, in her Post-doctoral research in the State University of Pennsylvania (Pennstate) with Jerry Bona, met with Felipe Linares and Gustavo Ponce. In 1994, Iório invited Linares to the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Rio de Janeiro where he is working since then. On supervision of Iório and Linares, several Brazilian and foreign students got PhD. These students (scientific sons) are not only working in several Brazilian and foreign universities but also supervising students to produce new PhDs (scientific grand-sons). In this way, a big network of researchers working on nonlinear dispersive PDEs with Brazilian legacy has formed.

The objective of this Workshop is to bring together national and foreign researchers working in this area to further enhance interaction so as to attract young people (specially graduate students). We believe that this Workshop will be the first one and would try our best to organize it biannually.
